During the Renaissance, Italian architects were inspired by elements of antiquity. In the 16th century, Renaissance windows inspired by antiquity were tall and rectangular, often with window pediments and balconies, which during the High Renaissance evolved into Palladian-type windows extending from floor to ceiling, flanked by sidelights and fan-shaped transoms. Classical architecture was based on natural light, and therefore attention was paid to generous window dimensions, which could also serve as doors and lead to small balconies. During the European wars, the French immediately adopted this concept and began using it intensively. At the same time, they introduced their own element to the design by incorporating numerous window panes secured with muntins into the construction. The ability of French windows to bring light into a room while providing access to a balcony made them an instant hit, and the concept became widely adopted in architectural design throughout the Baroque era. The “windows” soon became doors and became popular as interior doors, thanks to their ability to maintain the flow of light indoors. A true French window is actually much narrower and more elegant in proportion than the wider products that are almost universally sold today. French windows open outward together without a mullion separating them (the so-called astragal solution).

What Is a French Window?

Currently, a French window refers to a large-format window typically extending from floor to ceiling that connects the interior with the exterior. It can be fixed (non-opening), opening, or sliding. It is most commonly used as balcony doors or patio doors.

Interesting fact: Technically, it is a window, not a door. Entry doors have different structural characteristics (hardware, infill, profile, etc.). Entry doors are designed for high daily usage frequency.

Contemporary Types of French Windows

If we consider it to be a “floor-to-ceiling” window, a French window today can have various opening methods and constructions:

Image: Large double-leaf French window by Schüco with classic outward opening

Double-Leaf

Both leaves open. It will not be possible to place a radiator under the window. It is also important to consider that the bottom frame can be classic (window) or transitional (easier passage), in which case this solution will have less water tightness.

What Else to Consider with French Windows?

curtains and blinds

exterior shading

railing on upper floors

Summary

A French window is a beautiful, functional, and trendy element that:

allows maximum daylight into the interior,

visually enlarges the space,

connects the interior with the exterior,

and at the same time increases property value.

Want to Know More?

Check out other articles, get inspired by completed projects, follow us on social media where we add interesting tips and information, and reach out to us :) We look forward to hearing from you.

Follow us: YOUTUBE, Facebook, LinkedIn

Instagram:

A Bit of History The French window is somewhat of an impostor and could more accurately be called an Italian, Roman, or even Greek window, because that is where its design roots truly lie.
