How to Request a Quote?

Design and Planning

Even at the planning stage, it is important not to neglect details that could negatively affect the quality of the work or installation. These primarily concern details of frame connections to jambs, lintels, and floors, with emphasis on preventing thermal bridges. Details related to the installation of shutters and blinds, as well as connections of structures to the floor, are also problematic. Be aware that if installers begin shimming doors, heavy glazed walls, or sliding systems on site with bricks and pieces of lumber they find lying around, the mistake was made precisely at this stage.

Documentation for Preparing a Price Quote

If something as important as replacing old windows with new ones, or installing new windows, is to succeed, the selection process must be approached thoughtfully. Before having a price quote prepared for opening infills, devote maximum attention to preparing a list of all elements you need with the most detailed technical specification possible. The list of required elements and their parameters should be based on architectural requirements, intended use, and the principles of building physics. This “parameterized” list of elements should be part of the project documentation for the building. An identically and precisely formulated request sent to different suppliers has the enormous advantage for you that the received quotes will be easier to compare with one another. It is very important to realize that only a detailed specification can be reliably priced. For a better idea, we will provide an example with buying a car. When you contact a window seller with the request: “I am requesting a price quote for a window measuring 2.5 x 3 m,” it is as if you asked a car dealer: “please give me a price for a passenger car.” Just as it is not possible to determine the price of a car if its make, engine power, equipment, etc., are not specified, it is also not possible to determine the price of a window if its other parameters are not known.

Which parameters is it therefore important to state in a request for a price quote?

Material (plastic, aluminum, wood, wood-aluminum). Please keep in mind that each material has its specific area of application. They are not alternative materials—neither from an architectural standpoint nor from a price standpoint. Therefore, it is not advisable to have a quote prepared for all materials. Whether your windows and doors will be plastic or aluminum should be known before you request a quotation.

Color of window frames. It is necessary to specify the required color of profiles both externally and internally. Especially with plastic structures, this fact has a significant impact on price.

Window division and determination of opening method resulting from architectural requirements and their manner of use. Schematic dimensioned sketches are also essential, without which our technicians cannot properly price the inquiry.

Required parameters of window frames. This includes profile construction depth, number of chambers, number of seals, or the heat transfer coefficient of the window frame Uf.

Required glazing parameters. The most important are the heat transfer coefficient of glazing Ug, solar factor g, light transmittance TL, as well as spacer bar material.

Required parameters of the finished product expressed by the heat transfer coefficient of the window Uw.

If you do not have a list of elements from a designer, you can create and send an inquiry according to your preferences through our Quote Configurator here.

Evaluation of Price Quotes

Sometimes it is difficult to navigate the multitude of quotes and separate reputable sellers from less reputable ones :) We hope the following points will help you properly evaluate the received quotes. What to look for and what to watch out for?

Check the number of priced items. It should be exactly as you requested.

Pay attention to the declaration of origin of materials of the offered structures and carefully verify it. Not all information about the origin of the product or profile system is truthful. If you have doubts, request that the supplier substantiate their claim about origin.

If a price quote declares a heat transfer coefficient value for insulating glazing of Ug = 1.0 W/m²K, in most cases this is misleading. To achieve such a value, the coated low-e glass would have to have an emissivity level = 0.01 according to standard EN 673. However, this is unlikely, since in Slovakia and generally in Europe, coated glass with emissivity levels from 0.02 and higher are standardly offered. In that case, the glazing has a standard value of Ug = 1.1 W/m²K.

Pay attention to the format of the price quote. A reputable quote should be prepared item by item, in electronic form, and should contain dimensioned sketches of products.

A complete quote should not lack contractual, delivery, payment, and warranty terms.

Request a product brochure in electronic or paper form. Visit the supplier’s website. Request references. An honest supplier will be happy to showcase their work.

The selected supplier should be able to provide you with complete services such as consulting, proposal of suitable solutions, product manufacturing, product installation, and long-term warranty and post-warranty service.

Uw value calculation protocol. As a customer, you are entitled according to STN EN 14351-1:2010 to a Uw value calculation for each individual requested element. It is an important parameter of windows and doors, which serves, for example, for calculating the energy balance of the entire building or designing heating. Therefore, request it and compare price quotes based on it as well.

Site Measurement

If you have selected a window supplier, arrange a site measurement with them. The measurement serves to ensure that the technical specification of your order is completely accurate. Based on the facts determined and agreed upon during the measurement, a draft contract for work will be prepared. During the measurement, keep in mind that:

By the date of measurement, access to windows/openings from both sides must be ensured

The client, or a person authorized by them, should be present during measurement

It is necessary to establish a binding benchmark (vertical reference point of the building, usually 1000 mm from the level of the future finished floor). After measuring the openings, nothing may subsequently be done to them (plastering, modification, change in floor height, etc.)

If necessary, construction readiness by the installation date can be agreed upon in writing.

No later than the measurement date and during measurement, all technical ambiguities that are not clear from the price quote must be specified (direction of window and door opening, their accessories, opacity of glazing, etc.).

Contract for Work on Supply and Installation of Windows

The draft contract for work should follow only after measuring the openings and final clarification of the technical specification of the supply. Ensure that the contract includes an appendix to the contract for work that technically and unambiguously defines the subject of the work delivery. This appendix should also contain drawings of characteristic details of the structure itself, as well as its connection to the building. The most precise and specific contract possible is your protection and guarantee that what is delivered will truly be what you agreed upon, approved, ordered, and signed.

We wish you good fortune and joy with your new windows or doors.
