The Foundation of Window Functionality

Insulating glass is a key component of every modern window. It affects not only thermal insulation but also light comfort, acoustics, security, and the overall living experience. Therefore, it is important to understand its properties and possibilities.

What is Insulating Glass

Insulating glass consists of multiple panes of glass separated by spacer frames and sealed into a single unit. The space between the panes is filled with gas (most commonly argon), which improves thermal insulation properties.

We also explain basic terms in the Window Maker’s Glossary:

Double-Pane Glass

Cross-section of a PVC window. Insulating triple-pane glass: three panes of glass are separated by a spacer frame.

Double-Pane vs. Triple-Pane Glass

In the past, double-pane glass was commonly used. Today, however, the demands for the thermal insulation performance of windows and buildings overall are higher.
Therefore, triple-pane glass with a warm edge spacer is now standard for residential spaces.

Double-pane glass is particularly suitable for:

Non-residential spaces
Renovations with specific constraints (with a limited budget)

Special Coatings – When Glass Needs to Fulfill Multiple Functions

Modern insulating glass can be supplemented with special coatings that improve or add entirely new functions to the insulating glass:

Higher light transmittance
Solar control coatings
Coatings to improve thermal insulation (so-called low-emissivity coatings)

Safety Glass

Safety glass is manufactured with a focus on two different functions:

Protection against injury
Protection against forced entry

These functions are achieved through special films or glass tempering.

Bird-Friendly Glass

For large glazed areas, special glass with a protective pattern exists, which is visible to birds but not to humans. Such a solution reduces the risk of birds colliding with the glass.

Designer Glass

Currently, various ornamental glass types are declining in popularity. A popular solution is frosted glass. The frosted effect is achieved by:

    • etching
    • or sandblasting

With sandblasting, it is possible to create individual patterns according to a template, allowing for subtle personalization of the appearance of doors or windows.
