Options for Exterior Window ShadingModern living brings large glazed areas and high comfort demands. Increasingly hot summers, however, mean overheating interiors, higher air conditioning bills, and worse conditions for sleep and work. In this article, we’ll show you why window shading is now a necessity and not just an aesthetic addition. We’ll compare the advantages of solar control glass, films, and exterior shading—so you can choose the solution that best fits your project.
Why Is Shading Transparent Curtain Wall Sections Important?
According to data and common sense:
- Warming climate – increasing number of hot and tropical days even in our latitudes
- Modern architecture – large windows facing south and west
- Rising cooling costs – the price of energy and air conditioning itself
Through 1 m² of window, up to 540 W of heat can penetrate the interior daily. In a typical family home with 30 m² of windows facing sunny sides, heat gains can reach up to 10 kW daily—which can mean 5–7 °C more in the interior if the windows are not shaded. Air conditioning solves this problem—but at a cost of approximately €16 per month + an investment of €1,500–2,000. A smarter solution is to invest in passive shading or quality glazing.

Solar Control Glass – A Solution for Decades
Solar control glass is among passive solutions. It is modified during production to transmit light while reflecting part of the heat. It is particularly suitable for window replacement or new construction.
What Do Key Values Mean?
- Ug – heat transfer coefficient: the lower, the better (e.g., Ug 0.5 W/m²K)
- g-value – solar factor: indicates how much solar energy the glass lets in (the lower, the less overheating)
Such glazing also prevents UV radiation penetration, which can damage furniture and floors. It requires no maintenance and works continuously all year round.
Solar Control Films – A Practical Option for Existing Windows
Films represent a more affordable alternative, especially for renovations. They are installed on glass from the inside or outside and are available in various versions (reflective, transparent…).
Advantages and Disadvantages of Films
Advantages:
- Low initial costs and quick application
- Possibility to add shading even later
Disadvantages
- Lifespan typically 10–15 years
- May fade or become damaged over time
Unlike glass, which is passive and durable, films are a temporary solution—but an effective one.

Options for Exterior Window Shading

If you want to complement shading both visually and functionally, other solutions exist.
Exterior Window Shading – Overview of Options:
- Exterior roller shutters – complete blackout, higher security, beware of thermal stress on glass
- Screen roller blinds (fabric) – transmit light, shade the sun, look modern, and withstand wind
- Exterior blinds – ability to tilt slats, technical design, wind sensor required
- Louvered sunshades, shutters, awnings – architectural additions with both shading and decorative function
- Their combination
Each solution has its place—window orientation, aesthetics, and maintenance must be considered.
